Looking for an art gallery post-quarantine in the L.A. area?
Jeffrey Deitch Gallery announced this week that Kenny Scharf will be exhibiting his paintings at the Los Angeles location on June 27, 2020 — initially presenting online until the gallery can reopen to the public.
Scharf, most known for his spray paint of faces, will be showcasing 400 variations, simply calling the exhibit “400 Faces.” He started spray painting faces in 1981 and has never looked back. He once stated that the faces he paints are reflections of his own personality — therefore, his paintings vary day-to-day depending on his mood.
On his site, he provides some insight on his thought process, stating that “Every project I undertake is building on my past experiences. My original approach is unchanged; it is a personal challenge to produce the best work possible every time.” The painter continued to say that it is very important for his work ” … to reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture through my art.”
The gallery has welcomed many notable artists in the past such as Hajime Sorayama, Keith Haring, Tom Sachs and many others — along with A-list guests like Miley Cyrus, Andre 3000 and Billy Idol. We were actually lucky enough to visit the gallery during the Tokyo Pop Underground exhibit in December 2019 which was curated by Shinji Nanzuka. The main featured artist was Sorayama along with Keiichi Tanaami, Toshio Saeki, Haroshi and other Japanese artists. Check out the slideshow below from our personal camera roll.
