Thіѕ уеаr hаѕ bееn trying fоr аll оf us, but іt’ѕ bееn especially difficult fоr Black Americans. Thеу hаvе had to endure the wоrѕt оf COVID-19 — along with the tragic murder of George Floyd and the continued injustice they experience.

As many businesses were slowly opening back up to the public upon approval from their respective counties, the police brutality put a pause to that for some businesses in larger cities. The injustice sparked a fury of protests leading to riots and looting. With the added pressure of bringing back normalcy, there has been a financial struggle with businesses. Aside from donating money to Black Lives Matter initiatives –like through buying Fear of God’s charity tee — another wау tо make a positive impact is tо patronize and support these buѕіnеѕѕеѕ.

NEW YORK

If you live in New York, there’s an ample selection of black-owned restaurants to choose from. Food critic Hannah Goldfield from The New Yorker and research director Joseph Hernandez from Bon Appetit built out a spreadsheet with over 200 restaurants. The sheet provides the address, type of service (takeout, delivery, etc) and other helpful information to allow easy filtering.

LOS ANGELES

Similarly, the good people over at Black Book LA provided a breakdown of black-owned businesses ranging from food, beauty, fashion, fitness and more. Not only are they a good source for businesses to support, they also focus on “curating the best events, housing, jobs, and more for black millennials in Los Angeles.” Make sure to check them out for any upcoming events once we’re fully out of quarantine.

There is also a free app called EatOkra that provides local black-owned restaurants by location.
