It’s great to see the company announce the NBA legend as the third & final cover athlete, while honoring him with the “Mamba Forever” edition. Bryant tragically died in a helicopter crash in January along with his daughter, Gigi, and 7 other people.
2K will be releasing two special “Mamba Forever” edition covers — remembering Kobe’s long legacy while featuring one of his two jersey numbers on each of the covers. The current generation cover shot will highlight the Lakers star going in for a right-handed dunk in 2001, while the next-gen cover will show the L.A. legend in his #24 jersey during his final, 60-point game in 2016.
Alfie Brody, the vice president of global marketing at NBA 2K, explained the significance of the the covers and athletes by saying: “Each of our cover athletes represent different eras of the game of basketball—Damian Lillard dominates the court today, Zion Williamson is a standard-bearer for the next generation of NBA superstar and what more could be said about Kobe? Three athletes representing the current, future and storied history of the game. Today’s exciting announcement is just the first of many for NBA 2K21; it’s going to be a huge year for basketball fans and NBA 2K gamers.”
NBA 2K21 will be releasing in September on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Google Stadia … and will also be available on PS5 & XBOX Series X during the holiday season. If you want to hop on the pre-orders, they’re available now on the official NBA 2K site with the current-gen edition priced at $59.99, next-gen edition at $69.99 and the Mamba Forever edition for $99.99.
